Technology’s Effect on Cooking at Home

Updated: Mar 16, 2021

In our modern society, technology has become more prevalent than ever before. With the onset of a world pandemic forcing people to stay at home the usage of technology has soared. Even before being locked in our homes, technology played a huge part in the decision making process with regard to our diets. The advent of takeaway delivery apps such as “Just Eat”[1] and “Deliveroo”[2], led many people to regard technology as a helpful but unhealthy crutch. Technological advances have changed the way we eat in many ways, some of which may seem to be for the worse. In this blog we will look at the positive effects of technology on our diets.

The usage of technology can easily empower many people to cook for themselves instead of relying on frozen food or takeaways. With a few simple hacks we can make big changes to how we eat. Here are three of the top beneficial ways that you can use technology to influence the way you cook at home.

Many people find inspiration from videos of chefs online. Gordon Ramsay [3] for example not only critiques many dishes (often in an hilarious and engaging fashion) but also creates tutorials that anyone can follow to create their own tasty and healthy plates of food. By engaging with online media channels, it is easy to find a chef who suits your character and food preferences. There are many popular content creators online some with a variety of styles from informational to comical There are also livestreams which allow you to join in and chat with the content creator and the rest of the audience. No matter how you approach it you will be able to easily access videos which will appeal to you. To start your cookery journey use hashtags to see who you can follow and get inspiration from.

Another source of inspiration to help you get cooking at home is that recipes are now easily available online. Although cookbooks remain the publishing industries biggest selling genre, it is often easier to use a search engine such as google than try to find one in your shelf full of recipe books. It is simple to search online for a dish that you want to create and chose a recipe that suits you and your skill set. It is fast and free. Some online recipes even have small boxes that you can fill in to get the exact measurements that you will need for your ingredients, others even add ingredients directly in to your online shopping basket.

Lastly, there are many apps available that anyone can download straight to their phone. These apps range from large digital cookbooks to more niche cases. One interesting app for anyone to try would be “Supercook” [4]. Supercook is an app that you can install to your mobile device which allows you to enter ingredients that you already own. The app will then provide you with as many recipes as it can that you can make using just those ingredients. This and other similar apps are a fantastic way of to developing your skills with little extra cost.

These three simple ideas show how technology can bring the enjoyment back in to cooking and make learning how to cook more fun!
